Impacts of forest management on stand and landscape-level microclimate heterogeneity of European beech forests

چکیده
Abstract Context Forest microclimate influences biodiversity and plays a crucial role in regulating forest ecosystem functions. It is modified by management as result of changes structure due to tree harvesting thinning. Objectives Here, we investigate the impacts even-aged uneven-aged on stand- landscape-level heterogeneity microclimates, comparison with unmanaged, old-growth European beech forest. Methods We combined stand structural topographical indices derived from airborne laser scanning climate observations 23 meteorological stations at permanent plots within Hainich region, Germany. Based multiple linear regression model, spatially interpolated diurnal temperature range (DTR) an indicator across 4338 ha section 50 m spatial resolution. Microclimate was measured α-, β-, γ-diversity thermal niches (i.e. DTR classes). Results Even-aged forests showed higher microclimates than unmanaged forests. This mainly β-diversity resulting coexistence different developmental stages landscape. The greater complexity stand-level stands did not increase α-diversity microclimates. Predicted significantly lower more homogenous compared both types managed Conclusion If aims creating wide habitats landscape, co-existing differently should be considered, instead focusing specific type management, or setting aside reserves only.

Management Impacts on Nutrient Fluxes in Beech-podocarp-hardwood Forests
Clearfelling and downhill, skyline-hauler extraction of pulpwood and sawlogs in beech-podocarp-hardwood (PB5) forest, followed by slash-burning, produced increased streamflow yields of N, P arid dissolved cations. Nutrient outputs in the first four months after treatment were from 1 to' 1.5 times the normal annual output. Yields of Na, Mg, Ca, and K were from 1 to 6 times the normal output; K o...

Fallow deer impacts on Wakatipu beech forest
This study uses data from forty-nine 20 m × 20 m permanent plots measured in 1976, 1982, 1989 and 1997-2002 in Wakatipu Forest, western Otago. We relate changes in red (Nothofagus fusca), silver (Nothofagus menziesii) and mountain beech (Nothofagus solandri var. cliffortioides) forest vegetation to the presence of fallow deer (Dama dama). Vegetation composition is likely to have been altered pr...
متن کاملEvaluating management regimes for European beech forests using dynamic programming
Aim of study: This contribution describes a systematic search method for identifying optimum thinning regimes for beech forests (Fagus sylvatica L.) by using a combination of optimization heuristics and a simple whole stand growth prediction model. Area of study: Data to build the model come from standard and management forest inventories as well as yield tables from the Northern and Western pa...
